The Hurley Pro Sunset Beach wrapped, officially, on Wednesday, Feb. 21st with pumping surf and memorable performances. (Molly Picklum’s hail mary turn!)

And while most of the attention was deservedly focused on the groundbreaking women’s surfing – in addition to Jack Robinson’s near-perfect, two-for-one-tube in the Final; and a controversial interference call – one crazy moment flew under the radar.

Italo Ferreira, squaring up against Jack Robinson in the Quarterfinals, and one board-snapping, knee-buckling, gruesome-looking wipeout.

With under 30 seconds left in the heat, and Ferreira’s back up against the wall in need of a huge, 9.28 score, the Brazilian surfer decided to go for broke. One last push. Lay it all on the line. All in.

He paddled into a medium-sized set with just seconds to spare, cracked a quick speed check off the lip, then ramped up for something big. Probably an air-reverse. Not a common maneuver at a wave like Sunset Beach. And not one easily done in the howling offshore winds.

But…Italo mistimed it by milliseconds.

Italo wound up, cracked the lip just a beat too late, then awkwardly cartwheeled through the air, landing on his board, and breaking it in the process. It appears Italo walked away unscathed. No fin to the thigh, no tweak on that injured knee from last season.

So it seems…

On social media, as poorly translated by AI bots, Italo thanked his fans:

“It’s amazing to see the support and encouragement from all of you. I am incredibly grateful to God for the opportunity to do what I love and to fight for my goals. Thank you for being part of this journey.”
