San Jose Sharks’ Ty Emberson 'likely' out for the season with lower-body injury
James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

Tough news for one of the young players on a struggling team.

On Monday, San Jose Sharks head coach David Quinn revealed that forward Ty Emberson is likely out for the rest of the season.

Emberson has been out of the lineup since Feb. 29, and was placed on injured reserve earlier this month with a lower-body injury.

It has been a rough rookie season for the 23-year-old, as Emberson has been banged up for stretches of the 2023-24 campaign after getting claimed off waivers from the New York Rangers back in September. After making his NHL debut in late October, Emberson missed 12 games with a lower-body injury in December. He was also on IR in January with an upper-body injury, before missing two weeks in early February with another upper-body injury

In 30 games this season, the former University of Wisconsin product has registered 10 points, scoring his first and so far only goal in the league on Nov. 25 against the Vancouver Canucks.

Emberson is on a one-year deal that he signed with the Rangers last July, with a $775,000 AAV. He is set to be a restricted free agent, with an estimated qualifying offer of $813,750.

Emberson spent the first two full seasons of his professional career in the minors, starting off with the Tucson Roadrunners, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes. He was traded to the Rangers’ system in July 2022, in a deal that saw Patrick Nemeth go to the Coyotes.

He posted a career-high 27 points in 69 games with the Blueshirts’ primary affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, last season.

The Sharks (16-46-8) are currently leading the “Slackin’ for Macklin” sweepstakes. They hold the worst record in the NHL, five points behind the Chicago Blackhawks.
