Bears Sign Assistant GM Ian Cunningham to Extension
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears are amid a second consecutive offseason under the spotlight. For the second time in as many years, the Bears own the first pick in the NFL Draft and are the main subject of conversation. Assistant general manager Ian Cunningham is a huge part of the recent success and has been with Poles for some time now.

The Bears are reportedly signing Cunningham to a contract extension, per NFL insider Adam Schefter.

Ian Cunningham and the Bears

Cunningham has been with Poles and the Bears since 2021. He earned the respect and interest of the NFL as general manager positions started opening up after the regular season.

After the 2021 season, Cunningham interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans for their respective GM roles. But Cunningham returned to Chicago after multiple interviews.

In January following the conclusion of the 2023 season, the Washington Commanders requested to interview Cunningham for a front-office executive role. The Bears would've received compensatory picks in the draft had Cunningham left.

Adam Schefter believes Cunningham will be one of the top candidates for open general manager roles in the next hiring cycle after helping the Bears completely revamp their roster.
